Press release: Investigations Need Confidentiality

03 December 2009

Concerning the case which the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office (SPRK) opened on the allegations made by Mr N.B, EULEX will protect the confidentiality of the ongoing investigations to allow SPRK prosecutors and police officers to work free from any form of interference.

The principle of confidentiality is a basis of the Rule of Law, intended to ensure the effectiveness of the investigations as well as the rights of all concerned individuals, be they witnesses or suspects.

In any criminal investigation evidence needs to be gathered and checked by investigators and prosecutors with the utmost accuracy. Only at the end of such investigations can a conclusion be made whether individuals will be brought before a court for a fair and public trial.

As a Rule of Law Mission, EULEX fully respects this principle of confidentiality in its public statements and expects that this example is followed by all, so that equal justice can be delivered.
