EULEX and the Government of Kosovo have reaffirmed their commitment to working together to improve the rule of law across Kosovo. In a joint press conference at Government Building, the Head of Mission, Xavier de Marnhac and the Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci, spoke of their concerns over the situation in the north of Kosovo.

“Innocent civilians, KFOR, and EULEX have been under attack (in the north) over the past several days, and this is simply not acceptable. All forms of violence and intimidation will not be tolerated,” said Xavier de Marnhac, confirming that EULEX would work together with KFOR to restore freedom of movement.

“We have deployed a robust number of police patrols to Mitrovica to ensure personal safety for all residents, in particular in the multi-ethnic areas. Recognizing the tragedy of the murder of a Kosovo Police officer on July 26, EULEX immediately launched a joint investigation together with Kosovo counterparts, as part of a series of investigations related to the events of this week.”

“The only way forward in finding a solution to the current situation is through the Dialogue. It is through the Dialogue that the two sides together can solve the underlying issues of the day. And let me add, that EULEX has always supported the restoration of full customs controls across Kosovo,” said the EULEX Head of Mission.

The Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said the dynamics and speed of action between the international community and the Kosovo institutions sometimes differed but that he welcomed the continuing close co-operation.

“The Government of the Republic of Kosovo welcomes close cooperation with EULEX in order to strengthen the rule of law throughout Kosovo’s territory,” said Mr Thaci.

“I have offered full cooperation to EULEX in order to restore the rule of law in the north jointly, in a civilized and democratic manner,” added the Prime Minister.
