EULEX Mission in Kosovo joins today the efforts around the world in commemorating the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. In support for equal treatment, tolerance and respect for diversity of the LGBTI community in Kosovo, the Mission will fly the Rainbow Flag.
“We reiterate on this day that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) rights are human rights. All people, regardless of their sexual orientation, or gender identity, are free to live without prejudice, fear, violence or discrimination,” said Ms. Papadopoulou.
The principle of non-discrimination is fundamental for EULEX’s Monitoring, Mentoring and Advising activities with Kosovo law enforcement agencies.
LGBTI rights are enshrined in the EU legal framework. The EU is committed to combating discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Article 21 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights provides that "any discrimination based on any ground such as sexual orientation shall be prohibited.”
In consultation with advocates from around the world, this year’s 2017 theme identified “families” as the worldwide focus – the role of families in the well-being of their LGBTI members and the respect of the rights of LGBTI families. The EU has widely honoured the courageous advocacy efforts of media journalists, activists, human rights defenders and members of civil society. “Their collective efforts are vital for raising awareness, documenting targeted violence and safeguarding fundamental human rights,” Ms. Papadopoulou emphasized.
