11 February 2013

Head of EULEX Bernd Borchardt met today with the Prime Minister of Kosovo Hashim Thaçi. During the meeting with the Prime Minister, Borchardt stressed the importance of the coordination and cooperation between EULEX and Kosovo rule of law institutions.

In a joint press conference, the Head of EULEX said: “The Prime Minister and I agreed that it is of utmost important that Kosovo’s rule of law institutions and EULEX work very closely together. We are here in a partnership, and partnership brings responsibilities for all sides. EULEX is a part of the EU family here, and Kosovo has a European aspiration.”

Borchardt said that when he left Kosovo in 1999, he knew that people here wanted a European Kosovo on the way to the European Union. “You have made big steps in this direction, and we are able and most willing to help in this field, building on progress made to date.

Apart from promoting the rule of law, fighting organised crime and corruption, and helping meet benchmarks for Visa Liberalization and towards a Stabilization and Association Agreement, we are also here to help with implementation of the important Dialogue agreements between Belgrade and Pristina. I’m very much looking forward for the work ahead, and to a close cooperation,” added Borchardt.
