EULEX DHoM Meets with Kosovo Police Regional Commanders North and South

10 December 2015

EULEX Deputy Head of Mission, Joelle Vachter, met today with Kosovo Police (KP) Regional Commander North, Nenad Djuric, and Kosovo Police Regional Commander South, Nehat Thaci.

The meeting builds on enhanced coordination between the KP Regional Commands in tackling mutual security issues. EULEX’s Police Strengthening Department has recently restructured its approach to increasingly focus on north/south collaboration, such as the recent joint operation on combating illegal logging throughout Kosovo. Ms. Vachter added that she is pleased with the improvements in security, emphasizing how this year’s Vidovdan celebrations were handled compared to ones in 2012.

Ms. Vachter stressed that “communication between the police and the public, as well as with media, is a key aspect in maintaining a secure environment, and while the north enjoys good public support, improvements in communication can be made.”

She commended the Commanders and their teams for taking steps to expand their communication capabilities and expressed her pleasure for their participation in an EULEX led media and communication training that will take place next week for select police officers from five north stations.

EULEX reaffirmed its support to KP and their mutual cooperation which is vital in responding to, and resolving, cross-regional cases, as well improving public perception of security in the region. The Deputy Head of Mission emphasized that she is eager to witness further progress in joint intervention capabilities, particularly in Crowd and Riot Control, as these are crucial components in diffusing tensions in both regions.

Both Commanders thanked EULEX for their continuing support, with Mr. Djuric emphasizing that KP Regional Command North enjoys a strong working relationship with EULEX, made evident by their daily communication and collaboration.
